Description

Did you know that a single question about the shape of space was worth a million dollars? In 1904, Henri Poincaré conjectured that if a three-dimensional manifold has no holes, it must be a sphere. This conjecture turned out to be one of the greatest mysteries in mathematics.

In 2000, the Clay Mathematics Institute included the Poincaré conjecture among the seven Millennium Problems, offering a $1 million prize for solving each one. This underscored its fundamental importance and complexity for the global scientific community.

The solution came from Russia. In 2002-2003, the eminent mathematician Grigori Perelman posted his proofs on the website arXiv.org. He used Richard Hamilton's revolutionary methods, confirming the validity of the Poincaré conjecture.

Surprisingly, in 2006, Perelman declined both the Fields Medal, considered the Nobel Prize for mathematicians, and a million dollars from the Clay Institute. His proof, confirmed by the international community, became one of the greatest breakthroughs of the 21st century.

So, the Poincaré conjecture is proven: a closed, simply connected three-dimensional manifold is homeomorphic to a three-dimensional sphere. This means that our universe, if finite and without holes, has the shape of a hypersphere. Think about this the next time you look at the stars!
