Description

Your most vivid memory may be a fabrication. It's been proven that our brains are capable of creating complete false memories, including details that never occurred in reality. This happens far more often than you think. Psychologist Elizabeth Loftus of the University of California, Irvine, demonstrated this phenomenon. In a 1995 experiment, she successfully implanted a false memory of getting lost in a shopping mall as children in 25% of participants. These memory distortions have serious consequences. More than 70% of the 375 convicted individuals in the United States exonerated by the Innocence Project's DNA tests were originally convicted due to faulty witness testimony. False memories occur when the brain confuses the source of information—real experience—with something heard or imagined. For example, after the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, many "remembered" details that weren't present on live television. It's important to remember: even the most vivid and emotional memories can be completely fabricated by the brain. Keep this in mind the next time you're absolutely certain about your childhood stories.
