First place goes to oleander, or Nerium oleander. This beautiful plant is deadly due to its cardioglycosides. Just one leaf can cause serious heart problems. Even drinking water from it is toxic. Dieffenbachia ranks second. Its sap contains calcium oxalate crystals, which cause severe burning and swelling of the mouth and larynx. Contact can lead to loss of voice, difficulty breathing, and even suffocation in children. Third place goes to various species of milkweed, members of the Euphorbia family. Their milky sap contains diterpene esters that irritate the skin and mucous membranes. Contact with the eyes causes inflammation, and ingestion can cause vomiting and diarrhea. Ficus trees, such as Ficus elastica and Ficus lyrata, are in fourth place. Their white, milky sap contains furocoumarins and resins. Contact with skin causes dermatitis, while ingestion can cause nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. And in fifth place is the azalea. All parts of this beautiful flower contain grayanotoxins. These substances negatively affect the cardiovascular and nervous systems, causing vomiting, convulsions, and arrhythmia. Always wash your hands after handling any houseplants!
