Ten historic railway hotels in Britain and Canada: London’s Midland Grand, Great Northern and Great Eastern, Newcastle’s Royal Station, Glasgow’s Grand Central, Chateau Frontenac in Quebec City, Banff Springs in Alberta, Chateau Laurier in Ottawa, Royal York in Toronto and Hotel Vancouver. An architectural selection, not a worldwide ranking of age, size or service quality. Hotels should not be confused with neighbouring railway stations. Great Eastern was extended in1901and later altered, so not every present feature dates to1884. Frontenac’s central tower belongs to the1920s; the complex appears inwinter2012. The stone Banff Springs complex took shape in1911-1928and is not the original1888wooden hotel. Vancouver shows the third hotel, opened in1939, not demolished predecessors; the2007stitched photographic view from the27thfloor of HyattRegency depicts one real building. Laurier appears in2010, Royal York in2017, London’s Great Northern and Great Eastern in2013. Archival photographs do not establish current condition, prices, services or unrestricted access.
