Description

Historic navigation locks at Bingley, Foxton, Caen Hill, Hatton, Neptune Staircase, Ottawa, Peterborough, Kirkfield, Rogny and Fonseranes. An engineering selection, not a worldwide ranking of age or size. Peterborough and Kirkfield are hydraulic boat lifts, not ordinary lock staircases. The Foxton photo shows its upper five-chamber flight; the complete complex comprises two such flights. Caen Hill has sixteen main steep locks within an overall flight of twenty-nine. Hatton wide concrete chambers reflect1930s reconstruction. Neptune Staircase is seen descending towards Loch Eil. Rogny is a disused dry staircase bypassed by a later canal route. Fonseranes originally had eight chambers and nine gates; six chambers form the later route. The source does not specify a date for its photograph. Other photos date from2007-2021.
