Ten historic city gates: Brandenburg Gate in Berlin, Holstentor in Lubeck, Porta Nigra in Trier, Bab Bou Jeloud in Fez, Bab Mansour in Meknes, Puerta de Alcala in Madrid, Porta San Sebastiano in Rome, Micklegate Bar in York, Sungnyemun in Seoul and Zhengyangmen in Beijing. This is a selection, not an age ranking. Both defensive gateways and monumental city entrances are included. Sungnyemun is shown after restoration following the 2008 fire. The Beijing photograph shows the main gatehouse, not the separate archery tower. Historic structures have been altered and restored; archival photographs do not establish present access conditions.
