Ten historic power stations: Battersea and Bankside in London, Vemork near Rjukan, White Bay in Sydney, Central Tejo in Lisbon, EC1 in Lodz, Lots Road in London, East Perth, Wroclaw South and Suvilahti in Helsinki. An architectural and industrial-heritage selection, not a ranking of age, size or present output. Vemork and Wroclaw are hydroelectric examples; the others belong to the history of thermal generation. Battersea appears in a May2010 archival photograph before redevelopment, Bankside in a circa1985 view before conversion to Tate Modern, White Bay in June2009 before later conservation, and Lots Road in June2005 before residential conversion. EC1 is shown in July2014, East Perth in April2012 and Suvilahti in September2013. A station’s founding date does not date every building: later expansions and adaptive reuse added structures. Central Tejo is not the modern MAAT Gallery; Suvilahti’s pale power-house is distinct from the gas holders and neighboring red-brick Hanasaari plant. Photographs do not establish present condition, generation or unrestricted visitor access. All photographs carry the stated open licenses.
