Description

Ten historic water reservoirs: Basilica, Binbirdirek and Theodosius in Istanbul; Piscina Mirabilis in Bacoli; Fermo Roman cisterns; the Veletas Palace aljibe in Caceres; El Jadida Portuguese Cistern; Lisbon Amoreiras Reservoir; La Malga in Carthage and the western cistern of Dara. A selection, not a ranking by size or age. Binbirdirek has stacked column shafts; disputed precise construction dates are not repeated. Theodosius dating is inferred from architecture, not a surviving building inscription. Piscina Mirabilis is a reservoir, not a swimming pool. Its photograph was previously retouched on Commons by AlMare; original photographer Peter Schuele. Amoreiras is not ancient: completion continued into the nineteenth century. La Malga shows surviving reservoirs rather than nearby fortifications. Dara shows a cistern rather than the necropolis. Photographs from 2005–2023 do not establish current access, condition or water operation. Authors and open licenses are listed below.
