Description

Ten historic European railway bridges: Forth, Royal Albert, Glenfinnan, Ribblehead, Barmouth, Conwy, Landwasser, Garabit, Goeltzschtal and Solkan. An engineering selection, not a worldwide ranking of age, length or height. Forth is distinct from neighbouring road bridges. Glenfinnan uses mass concrete; Ribblehead has stone facing and brick elements. The Ribblehead photo shows a readable long structure, with the nearest continuation beyond its original edge. Barmouth shows the metal section in2017, before the2020-2023restoration replaced metal spans; this is not the entire long bridge or evidence of unchanged present components. Conwy appears in2009, Landwasser in2020, Garabit in2018and Goeltzschtal in2012. Official accounts distinguish Garabit construction, completion and entry into service differently, so narration states only the nineteenth century. Solkan’s stone arch was reconstructed in1927after wartime destruction; the adjacent road bridge is a separate structure. Archival photographs do not establish present condition, train operations or visitor access. Authors and open licenses are listed below.
