Ten historic pumping stations: Crossness and Abbey Mills (historic Station A) in London, Wouda near Lemmer, Papplewick in Nottinghamshire, Claymills in Burton upon Trent, Kew Bridge in Brentford, De Cruquius in Haarlemmermeer, Chestnut Hill High Service station in Boston, West Ryde in Sydney and Spotswood in Melbourne. An architectural and industrial-heritage selection, not an age or size ranking. The buildings served different purposes: Crossness, Abbey Mills, Claymills and Spotswood pumped sewage; Wouda and De Cruquius served land drainage; Papplewick, Kew Bridge, Chestnut Hill and West Ryde were water-supply facilities. De Cruquius appears across the ring canal in an August1995 archival photograph. Chestnut Hill appears in Jet Lowe’s architectural photograph from about1984. The photographs do not establish present building condition, visitor access or current pumping arrangements. A complex’s opening date does not date every engine house. Kew Bridge is represented by its Great Engine House, not the standpipe tower. All photographs carry the stated open licenses.
