Description

Ten historic airport terminals: Croydon, Le Bourget, Berlin Tempelhof, Liverpool Speke, Floyd Bennett, the TWA Flight Center and LaGuardia Marine Air Terminal in New York, Helsinki Malmi, Prague’s original Ruzyne terminal and Dublin’s original central terminal. An architectural selection, not a ranking of age, size or passenger traffic. Le Bourget appears in September2006 before later restoration; pole-mounted aircraft and rockets are museum exhibits. Speke is shown from its former airside after hotel conversion. Tempelhof construction began under Nazi rule and remained unfinished because of war; civilian use followed after the war. TWA’s historic Saarinen shell appears in May2019; new hotel wings behind it are not original terminal architecture. The Marine Air Terminal is shown in David Sharpe’s1974 archival photograph for NPS/HAER. Malmi appears in January2020, Ruzyne in July2015 and Dublin in November2010. Dublin’s terminal dates to the early1940s: owner publications differ on its exact opening year, which should not automatically equal the airport’s opening date. Photographs do not establish present condition, flights or unrestricted visitor access. All photographs carry the stated open licenses or public-domain status.
